7 things to look for when choosing a voice assistant for your site
Mehmet Yıldızlı · Founder, Vocalun

Before adding a voice assistant to your site, look at seven things: language quality, where its information comes from, whether it says it's an AI, how voice and personal data are handled, the pricing model, setup effort, and how it connects visitors to you. Below we go through what to ask for each one.
1. Language and conversation quality
Can the assistant speak naturally in your customers' language? Don't judge this from the marketing copy; try it on your own site with your own questions. It also matters that it can stop and listen when interrupted; in real conversations people cut in.
2. Where does it get its information?
Some tools ask you to enter questions and answers by hand; others learn from your site. Content entered by hand goes stale over time. The real question is: what does the assistant do when it's asked something it doesn't know? An assistant that makes up prices, timings or figures does more harm than having no assistant at all.
3. Does it say it's an AI?
Visitors should know they're talking to an AI, not a person. The European Union's AI Act also requires that users be informed when they are interacting with an AI system. If your site has visitors from the EU, don't skip this one.
4. Voice recordings and personal data
Is the audio of conversations recorded? Where are the name and phone number a visitor leaves stored? Does your privacy notice cover this processing? In Türkiye, processing personal data is governed by Law No. 6698 on the Protection of Personal Data (KVKK); put these questions to the assistant provider in writing.
5. Pricing model
Is the price based on the number of visitors, the number of messages or conversation time? What happens when you run out: are there extra charges, or does the assistant stop? What tends to surprise a budget is usually the overage terms.
6. Setup and maintenance effort
Do you need a developer to set it up? When you update your site, do you have to update the assistant separately? A tool that leaves the maintenance to you tends to fall out of use over time.
7. How does it connect visitors to you?
What do you have at the end of a conversation? Can it take an interested visitor's name, phone number and request and pass them on to you? Does it show that information to the visitor and get their confirmation when it takes it?
How does Vocalun measure up?
| Criterion | Vocalun |
|---|---|
| Language | Turkish and English; the assistant speaks your site's language. Visitors can interrupt it. |
| Source of information | Learns from your site; says only what's on your site and refers what it doesn't know to your team. |
| AI disclosure | The assistant card shows an "AI assistant" label. |
| Voice recordings | The audio of conversations isn't stored. |
| Pricing | Per conversation minute; no overage fees. When the minutes run out, the assistant doesn't start new conversations until the end of the month. |
| Setup | A single line; no product or Q&A entry. |
| Connecting to you | Shows the name, phone number and request on screen, gets confirmation and sends them to your dashboard. |
Frequently asked questions
Which criterion matters most?
It depends on your site, but where the information comes from and what it does when it doesn't know are critical for every site. An assistant that gives wrong information damages trust.
How can I try a voice assistant before buying?
Try it on your own site with your own questions. With Vocalun you can enter your site's address and try your assistant for 90 seconds without signing up.
What should I watch out for regarding KVKK?
Find out what personal data the assistant collects and where it stores it, and make sure your privacy notice covers that processing. Consult a lawyer if needed.
